The Cardinal Directive takes place on a partially colonized Mars, where most people live their entire lives in the safety of the biodomes, and never think twice about the swathes of the vast, uninhabitable deserts that surround them. These empty, hostile expanses are known as "The Red", and they are the domain of people known as harriers. Armed with bioengineered dragons and spacesuits, the harriers have taken up the monumental task of being the red desert's temporary denizens, creating and maintaining supply lines between the different towns and cities. They alone have familiarity with the desert, some even considering it to be more like their home than the habitable zones of the planet.
The Red is host to dangers and oddities in equal measure. There is much about this world that its people don't understand -- even the harriers. It's a fact that will become glaringly obvious as a new danger emerges from the sands: one that refuses to stay dead.
Cardinal's Mars is a world of raiders, cults, cowboy-style rangers, spies, dragons, undeath, and the Unknown and Unexplainable, with capital U's. And between the rise of the undead and troubled pasts catching up to them, our cast of harriers will need to navigate them all if they're going to survive.
Two months after the start of the storm, our protagonists are still missing in the tunnels beneath Mars’s surface, and the longer it takes to find them, the more fervent their pursuers become in trying to recover them.
Though footage from the present follows this hair-raising manhunt through zombie-infested territory, the files are corrupted with videos much older — though the faces we’ll see are no less familiar...
The sci-fantasy apocalyptic horror continues!
Burdened by the horrors of all that has happened so far, our protagonists are nevertheless far from being out of the woods just yet.
With the surface far above and the truth far below, our protagonists in the past and present struggle desperately for the one thing the world continues to deny them: escape.
Will they make it out? Find out!
Supplemental Files are my way of providing additional story content and information surrounding the setting of Cardinal. Sometimes these are additional bits of narrative, but they can also be art or worldbuilding pieces!
I do a ton of art for Cardinal! It's my favorite passion project and has gotten a lot of love over the years it has been running. Most of this art is free to view and up on either my Substack or my Instagram!
The Pounds of Flesh is an anthology series running alongside The Cardinal Directive! It's free to read and gives me a chance to explore snapshots into the sci-fantasy lives of various people living on Mars unrelated to our main plotline!
